Become an Advocate

Being an advocate indicates an acceptance of LGBTQIA identities and a commitment to working against discrimination directed towards LGBTQIA folks. This two-part interactive workshop operated through the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, Advocacy and Leadership and Wellness Resource Center, will consist of the following elements:

  • Review LGBTQIA terminology and assumptions

  • Discuss forms of oppression

  • Provide resources and detail the role of an ally and support techniques

  • Provide an understanding of bystander intervention

Workshop Details

After successfully completing Safe Zone I and Safe Zone II workshops, participants are considered an Advocate and provided with a plaque. The title of Advocate indicates acceptance of LGBTQIA+ identities and a commitment to working against discrimination directed toward the community.  This two-part interactive training totals three and-a-half hours to receive the certification.  For additional information regarding the Safe Zone certification, please contact us at .

Safe Zone I: Fundamentals of Gender & Sexuality

This 2 - hour interactive workshop is designed to create dialogue around gender and sexuality inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ community. Additionally, this session will discuss key terms, history, intersectionality, and systems that marginalize these identities.

Lastly, participants will learn fundamental strategies about the importance of LGBTQIA+ inclusion. This workshop is a prerequisite to attending Fundamentals of Gender & Sexuality Inclusion for acquiring a Safe Zone certification.

Safe Zone II: Advocating for LGBTQIA+ Inclusion

This 1.5 - hour interactive workshop utilizes concepts of fostering brave and courageous dialogues to provide LGBTQIA+ inclusion. Participants will be presented with various techniques that promotes advocacy, empowerment, and support for gender and sexuality inclusion.

Lastly, participants will gain a deeper understanding towards the importance of fostering inclusivity to dismantle systemic structures that have historically marginalized LGBTQIA+ individuals.  This is the concluding workshop to acquire a Safe Zone badge.
